“European Hydrogen Backbone” Initiative

Since its establishment in 2020, the EHB initiative has been making important contributions to the development of a European hydrogen market through its work. The initiative involves 31 energy infrastructure companies from 28 countries. With its studies and network maps, the EHB initiative aims to demonstrate that the vision of a European hydrogen backbone is both technically feasible and economically affordable. In its latest publications from 2022, it is shown that by 2030, five pan-European hydrogen supply and import corridors could emerge, connecting industrial clusters, ports, and hydrogen valleys to regions of abundant hydrogen supply. The initiative further outlines its vision of a Europe-wide hydrogen transmission network with a scope of almost 53,000 km by 2040 largely based on repurposed existing natural gas infrastructure.
