The EU's hydrogen strategy can be seen as a milestone for Europe’s transformation towards a climate-neutral future and underlines the importance of molecules in the future energy mix as well as for ensuring the EU's security of supply.
As part of efficient sector coupling, hydrogen is the link for the sustainable conversion of an integrated energy system and for the cost-effective achievement of climate neutrality of industry, transport, power generation and buildings throughout Europe. The hydrogen strategy specifically addresses how this potential can be quickly mobilized and realized through investment, regulation, market creation, and research and innovation. Hydrogen can supply energy especially to those sectors that are not suitable for electrification. Furthermore, the storage capacity of hydrogen balances the fluctuating generation from renewable energy sources. At EU level, however, a sufficient supply of hydrogen can only be ensured through coordinated investment by the public and private sectors. The focus of the EU is on the development of green hydrogen capacity, which is produced from wind and solar energy using power-to-gas technology. In the short and medium term, however, the European hydrogen strategy also emphasizes the role of low-carbon hydrogen (via methane electrolysis/pyrolysis or CC(U)S [Carbon Capture (Utilization) and Storage]) to support the goal of rapid emission reduction as well as development of a viable market.
The EU hydrogen strategy explicitly includes Ukraine as a target area for the production of green hydrogen.
